First Confession

All children are to make their first confession before they receive First Holy Communion. Typically children make their first confession and first communion in 2nd grade. If your child is enrolled in a Catholic school or in a home school program, this is sufficient for sacramental preparation for first confession and first communion. If your child is enrolled in a public school, your child must complete sacramental preparation at our parish in order to receive first confession and first communion. To enroll your child in sacramental preparation, contact our Faith Formation Office.

Sacramental Prep for first confession and first communion includes:

  • Age appropriate material to help children understand the Sacrament of Confession and Eucharist and encounter Jesus in them

  • A class visit to the confessionals in the church

  • A retreat for the children and their parents

  • church visits, and classroom instruction.

After preparing for the sacrament, your child may make his/her first confession by attending the First Confession service at the church with the group of 2nd graders. These First Confession services are held at the church in the fall. Alternately, your child may also make his/her first confession by coming to the parish during our usual confession times.

Your child may make his/her first communion together with the full group of 2nd graders at one of two special first communion Masses offered at the parish in the Spring. If you are not able attend either of the first communion Masses, you may contact one of the priests to arrange a Sunday Mass during the year at which your child may make his/her first communion.
