Our Faith

One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic

Established by Jesus Christ and entrusted with His enduring, Real Presence in the Eucharist, the Church is One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.

We are endowed with a natural desire to seek Him, to encounter our Creator, to contemplate the mysteries of faith. For over 2000 years, the Catholic Church has stood as the beacon of truth for seekers everywhere.

Established by Jesus Christ and entrusted with His enduring, Real Presence in the Eucharist, the Church is One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.

He attended Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit for his graduate seminary formation and after graduation was ordained a priest on June 11, 2010 for the Diocese of Lansing.

He served in several parishes for four years before joining the faculty of Sacred Heart as a spiritual director and assistant professor of theology. In 2016, Fr. Thelen earned his Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Angelicum in Rome. He is the author of the book, Biblical Foundations for the Role of Healing in Evangelization (Wipf and Stock, 2018).

Whether your stay with us is long or you are simply here for the click of your mouse, our prayer and desire is that you will know the grace of Christ and the peace of His friendship. St. Patrick is a large, active, faith-filled parish that seeks to be a home to everyone in the Body of Christ. We strive to be responsive to God’s grace and to the leadership of the Church. We are Catholic. Come make us your home and see what God has planned.

Our Story

Rooted in history

St. Patrick Catholic Church has its roots in humble beginnings when the parish was a simple brick chapel whose members would don their finest attire, hitch the horses to their buggies, and make the journey to Sunday Mass.

The historic Old Irish Cemetery occupies a small, modest square of earth at the quiet, rural corner of McCabe and Silver Lake Road in Green Oak Township. Fewer than 50 tombstones survive, all of them bearing Irish names upon old stone tablets worn smooth and difficult to decipher by time: Morgan. Gaffney. Malone. McCabe. Corrigan.

In 1838, the McNamee family donated the land for a church and cemetery for the tiny but vigorous Irish community. The log church built behind this cemetery has been gone nearly 150 years. But that church and this quaint cemetery mark the scene of the birth of what would become St. Patrick Catholic Church in Brighton: Livingston County’s oldest faith community.
