Year End Tax Statements: Thank you!
You should be receiving in the mail at some point in the next week or two the tax statements which show your giving to the parish for the 2021 tax year. While only our good Lord knows how much sacrifice people are making to give to the parish, I do know that regular giving is one sign of authentic discipleship. Your giving allows us as a parish to have the right staff and programming to serve the mission of our parish. It’s making a big difference. Thank you very much for your generosity!

Batman is in Brighton and He Might be Catholic
You may have heard, a man dressed as Batman has been spotted all over Brighton/Howell area the past month. A few weeks ago, I totally saw this Batman driving a car in our parking lot and thought to myself, “this is very weird.” Maybe he’s Catholic? Now that I know what is happening, I say we invest in one of those large bat lights to shine in the clouds at night to summon him when needed. . .
Catholic Schools Week Begins
Each year there is a week set apart to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. We have various activities and assemblies to mark the uniqueness of our Catholic school. This weekend our school principal, Carley Dunphey, will be sharing a bit about Catholic Education and the uniqueness of our Catholic School which is the largest in the diocese. We will be having an Open House at our school this Sunday (Jan 30) from 1pm-3pm across town 1001 Charles Orndorf Rd, Brighton (Behind Meijer and next to the SELCRA park). If you haven’t been in our school and you would like to see it, now’s a good chance to! We have an excellent Catholic school and I am very proud of Mrs. Dunphey and our extraordinary teachers.
The Difference Christianity Made
As I stated back in December, every now and again I’m going to be posting articles that can offer theological, philosophical and cultural analysis from a Catholic perspective. The purpose would be to help us think about the world from the brilliance of the Christian worldview. This week’s selection is from George Weigel the official biographer of John Paul II. He is also a sharply intelligent theologian, historian and Catholic commentator.
In the Difference Christianity Made, Weigel succinctly articulates just some of the monumental contributions to Western civilization made by Christians. When we reject Christianity and its moral and intellectual framework that undergirds our civilization, we shouldn’t be surprised that it will collapse as it rejects Christian values. If you have anyone in your family who doesn’t think Christianity is important to what he/she values today in terms of science, economics, democracy, etc, you might want to read this. In fact, my hope is that all of the parishioners will know the unique contributions Christianity has made to civilization in this article. If you like his writing, he wrote a book called Letters to a Young Catholic, which is also very good for young Catholics.
Your servant in Christ,
Fr. Mathias
